Introduction
In a bold and visionary move, Odisha is set to position itself at the forefront of the global digital economy with the launch of India’s first Integrated Global Financial Technology Capability Hub (I-GFTCH) in Bhubaneswar. Slated for inauguration on August 21 by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the initiative marks a pivotal chapter in the state’s economic and technological evolution.
This one-of-a-kind hub is being developed in partnership with the Global Finance and Technology Network (GFTN) and the Asian Institute of Digital Finance at the National University of Singapore (NUS-AIDF). The collaboration aims to build a dynamic talent pipeline, support innovation in FinTech and InsurTech, and serve as a major catalyst for high-skill employment and economic growth in the region.
A Strategic Step Towards Digital Transformation
The I-GFTCH is envisioned as the cornerstone of Odisha’s ambitious long-term vision — Vision Odisha 2036 and 2047 — which aims to dramatically expand the state’s financial services sector. Currently contributing around 8% to the state’s Gross State Value Added (GSVA), the sector is being earmarked for rapid expansion, with a target to boost its GSVA share to nearly 49% by 2047. This would be achieved by promoting advanced banking, insurance, digital payments, and emerging FinTech solutions.
Electronics and IT Minister Mukesh Mahaling emphasized that the launch is not just about entering the FinTech race — it’s about setting the pace for it. “With I-GFTCH, Odisha positions itself as a global FinTech innovation hub. It is about creating future-ready talent, boosting service exports, and fostering innovation,” he said.
Professional Skilling for the Future
At the heart of the initiative lies a robust professional skilling programme, aimed at training over 7,000 graduates in FinTech and InsurTech over the next five years. The I-GFTCH certification programme is tailored specifically for final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students and is expected to begin in September.
The five-month hybrid course will feature:
- 60% online learning
- Two weeks of in-person training in Bhubaneswar
- Hands-on internship opportunities
Candidates will be selected through an online entrance test, and successful students will receive a certification from NUS-AIDF — adding global recognition to their credentials.
The curriculum will cover high-impact areas including artificial intelligence, blockchain, governance, insurance, and financial technologies. The program is not just academic in nature; it integrates real-world projects and job-readiness components, paving the way for over 2,000 direct job opportunities through skill development and employment linkages.
More Than a Training Centre
Beyond skilling, the I-GFTCH will house a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence (CoE) focused on digital innovation and business acceleration. The CoE will serve as an incubation and growth engine for startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), offering a comprehensive support system including:
- Mentorship
- Incubation programs
- Bootcamps
- Market readiness workshops
- Venture development assistance
This holistic approach is expected to enhance Odisha’s innovation ecosystem, strengthen its digital economy, and contribute to the state’s ambition of becoming a global FinTech powerhouse.
Economic Impact and Global Integration
According to the state government, the direct value creation from the I-GFTCH is estimated at ₹299 crore, with a projected indirect economic impact of ₹898 crore over five years. This multiplier effect will significantly boost service exports, employment, and the digital economy across multiple sectors.
Principal Secretary of Electronics and IT, Vishal Kumar Dev, highlighted that the hub is not just an infrastructure project, but a strategic nerve centre of a globally integrated, multi-pronged digital growth strategy. “It will drive inclusive growth, foster international collaboration, and ensure that Odisha remains competitive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape,” he said.
Global Recognition and Events
The international scope of I-GFTCH is reinforced by Odisha’s recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GFTN and NUS-AIDF during the visit of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam earlier this year. This partnership underscores the state’s commitment to aligning with global technological standards and innovation networks.
Further amplifying its global stature, Odisha will host the India edition of the Black Swan Summit (BSS) in the first quarter of next year. Originally launched in Perth, Western Australia, the BSS has become a premier global platform for exploring disruptive technologies like tokenisation, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and digital infrastructure. The event is expected to bring together thought leaders, innovators, and policymakers from across the globe, anchoring Odisha’s role in the Black Swan Network — GFTN’s flagship initiative for international collaboration and foresight.
A Future-Ready Vision
The Group CEO of GFTN, Sopnendu Mohanty, praised Odisha’s bold vision, stating that the state is not just creating a training hub, but unlocking global opportunities for local talent. “This initiative will drive the creation of a future-ready digital economy by empowering professionals with world-class skills,” he said.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj echoed the sentiment, affirming that the I-GFTCH will firmly place Odisha on the global map of digital skilling. “We are building a talent pipeline that aligns with India’s innovation economy. This certification is more than a course — it’s a passport to global opportunity,” he added.
As India accelerates its digital transformation journey, Odisha’s Integrated Global FinTech Capability Hub stands as a beacon of innovation, education, and inclusive growth. With its blend of global collaboration, skill development, entrepreneurial support, and economic foresight, I-GFTCH is poised to not only transform Odisha — but to set the standard for FinTech leadership across the nation.
